How often should you clean your blinds?
You don’t need to clean your blinds every week. If you notice dust starting to gather, give them a quick wipe-down instead of letting it build up. How often you need to clean your blinds can depend on where they are fitted.
Those near cooking areas can pick up grease and splashes, so they may need cleaning more regularly. But those in other areas may only need an occasional dusting.
How to clean Venetian blinds
Anyone with Venetian blinds knows dust loves the slats. Luckily, it doesn’t take much to remove it. Here are some simple tips to follow when cleaning your Venetian blinds:
- Tilt the slats until they’re closed
- Run a microfibre cloth or soft duster across them
- Turn them the other way and do the same again
- Keep your touch light so you don’t bend the slats
If you have a mark that won’t dust off your Venetian blinds, the material they are made from will inform how you tackle it. If the material can be damp cleaned, try a well-wrung cloth and be careful not to soak the surface.
Cleaning Roman blinds
With Roman blinds, it’s the folds where you’re most likely to find hidden dust. Lower the blind and gently go over the fabric with the soft brush attachment on your vacuum. Keep the suction low and take your time around the folds.
Blot small marks rather than rub them. Where the fabric allows, use a lightly damp cloth and work only on the affected spot. Rubbing could make matters worse or change the fabric’s appearance.
Keeping roller blinds clean
Roller blinds are one of the easier styles to dust because you can lower them and work across a flat surface. A soft cloth will take care of most loose dust. Depending on the fabric, a vacuum and soft brush attachment on a low setting can work too.
For the odd mark, there’s usually no reason to clean the entire blind. Deal with the spot itself, using a lightly damp cloth if appropriate. Keep the blind lowered afterwards and let it dry before rolling it away to prevent mould from forming.
Staying on top of cleaning vertical blinds
When cleaning vertical blinds, it’s tempting to grab several vertical louvres at once, but going one by one gives you more control and a better clean. Here are some tips for cleaning vertical blinds:
- Hold each louvre gently as you clean
- Wipe from the top towards the bottom
- Do both sides while you’re there
- Try not to twist or tug at the material
A soft cloth is enough for general dust. On suitable fabric louvres, you can also use your vacuum’s soft brush on low suction.
